Local building stock
Fife鈥檚 buildings and the repairs they need
Fife鈥檚 coast is lined with stone towns. In the East Neuk, Anstruther, Pittenweem, Crail and St Monans are built of rubble stone, often harled, with pantiled roofs and crow-stepped gables. These walls face the Firth of Forth and the North Sea, so driven rain and salt are constant. Lime harl and lime pointing let them dry out between storms. Cement renders and pointing trap the water, and the stone behind decays.
St Andrews has a large stock of sandstone buildings, many listed, including university and town centre properties where repairs must match the original stone and detail. Cupar, Falkland and the inland villages share the same mix of sandstone and rubble.
Towns and industry in the south and west
Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and Dunfermline have larger commercial and industrial stock. Industrial estates such as Mitchelston in Kirkcaldy, Queensway and Southfield in Glenrothes, and Pitreavie in Dunfermline need concrete slab repairs and resin floors in workshops, warehouses and food production units. Along the Forth, Rosyth and Burntisland have marine and port sites where concrete is exposed to salt and needs protection after repair.
Basements and cellars
Coastal towns and older Fife properties often have cellars cut into sloping ground. Water ingress through the walls and floor is common, and it needs a survey of where the water is coming from before a tanking or waterproofing system is specified.

What clients say on
We needed a quality operator with the skills and experience to re point the sea facing wall of our home in Anstruther, Fife, a traditionally 3 story property built in the 1800鈥檚. We were recommended to speak to A&B Building Solutions who proved to be the ideal company. We agreed a competitive price for the job and are delighted with the results. The guys were very professional and solved a number of unforeseen challenges. I鈥檇 happily recommend A&B Building Solutions to anyone looking for work to be done in their property and will definitely be contacting them first any future needs.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about work in Fife.
What mortar should be used to repoint a coastal stone house in Fife?
Exposed coastal walls in the East Neuk take driven rain and salt. A lime mortar, matched to the stone and the exposure, lets the wall dry out between storms. Cement pointing holds water in the stone and speeds up its decay.
Do you cover the whole of Fife?
Yes. North and east Fife are a short drive over the Tay from Dundee. Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and Dunfermline are about an hour away.
