Glasgow鈥檚 buildings and the repairs they need
Glasgow is a sandstone city. The earlier tenements and commercial buildings are in blonde sandstone, and from the late 19th century red sandstone came into use across the West End, Southside and city centre. Red sandstone is often soft and laminated, so it flakes and delaminates where water and frost get in. Cement pointing and cement patch repairs from past decades make it worse. Lasting repairs cut back to sound stone, indent new stone or use a matched repair mortar, and repoint in lime.
Tenement repairs are shared between owners and usually run through a factor. Common items are chimney stacks, eroded window surrounds and string courses, failed pointing, back court walls and rainwater goods.
Concrete in Glasgow
Post-war housing, multi-storey car parks and commercial buildings across the city are in reinforced concrete. Balconies, walkways and stairs spall as the steel corrodes, and need patch repairs and protective coatings.

We refurbished the disabled access ramp at Aldi in Carluke, South Lanarkshire. The concrete was repaired with Sika Monotop 630 Rapid, then finished with a three-coat MMA resin system with a full anti-slip aggregate, giving a durable, slip-resistant surface for customers.

Why does red sandstone in Glasgow crumble?
Much of Glasgow's red sandstone is soft and bedded in layers. Water, frost and salts open those layers, and hard cement pointing or cement patch repairs make it worse by forcing moisture out through the stone. Repair means cutting back to sound stone and indenting new stone or a matched repair mortar, then repointing in lime.
