The problem
The Coach House is a red brick building with sandstone dressings, an arched carriage doorway and a decorative timber gable. Over the years the masonry had weathered and gathered foliage, the joinery and gable panelling had deteriorated, and the chimney needed rebuilding. The rainwater goods, sills, lintels and mullions also needed attention.
Our solution
We started by cleaning the masonry with two biocidal washes and an intensive power wash, which removed the foliage and growth. The brickwork was then repointed throughout in lime mortar, which lets the walls dry out and does not trap moisture against the brick.
The roof was repaired and the chimney rebuilt and waterproofed. New cast iron gutters and downpipes replaced the old rainwater goods. Sills, lintels and mullions were repaired or replaced where required. Four curved-head casement sash windows were made and fitted. The woodwork and the decorative gable and façade panelling were repaired and repainted, a new weather vane and new signage were installed, and redundant cables were removed from the walls.
