Lift shaft waterproofing with the Sika-1 system, Aberdeen

We waterproofed the floor and wall upstands of a lift shaft with the Sika-1 system, a cementitious waterproofing system. The concrete was prepared first, the floor to wall junctions and the areas around equipment and penetrations were detailed with care, and the lift equipment was protected throughout.

The problem

The pit at the foot of this lift shaft needed waterproofing to help prevent water getting in and to protect the structure of the shaft. The space is small and enclosed, and the lift equipment and its fixings stand in it. None of the equipment could be removed, so it all had to be protected while we worked around it.

Our solution

We wrapped and taped the existing lift equipment to protect it for the whole job. The existing concrete surfaces were then prepared so the waterproofing would bond to them, and fillets were formed at the floor to wall junctions, as the before photo shows.

We then applied the Sika-1 system, a cementitious waterproofing system, to the shaft floor and the surrounding wall upstands. We gave particular attention to the floor to wall junctions, and to the areas around the equipment bases and every penetration through the floor and walls.

The result

The lift pit has a continuous cementitious waterproofing layer across its floor and up its walls, designed to help prevent water ingress and protect the shaft. The slider above compares the pit before and after from the same angle.
