What Dundee’s industries need from a floor

Dundee’s industrial base is varied, and each type of site asks something different of its floor.

Food and drink production. Angus and the Carse of Gowrie grow much of Scotland’s soft fruit and vegetables, and the region has food processors, packers and drinks producers around Dundee, Arbroath, Forfar and Montrose. Their floors are washed down daily, take hot water and cleaning chemicals, and must leave no joints or gaps where bacteria can collect. Polyurethane screeds and coved edges suit these areas.

Laboratories and life sciences. The university and the life sciences businesses around the city need floors that resist chemical spills, clean easily and stay smooth for trolleys. Self-smoothing epoxy is the usual choice.

Workshops, engineering and port sites. Engineering workshops and the businesses around the Port of Dundee put heavy, concentrated loads on their floors: vehicles, plant and dropped tools. A thicker, impact-resistant resin over a properly repaired slab lasts far longer than paint.

Warehouses and trade counters. On the city’s industrial estates, older units often have dusting, uncoated slabs with broken joint edges. Repairing the joints and sealing the slab with resin stops the dust and protects stock.

Older slabs on Dundee’s industrial estates

Many units at Kingsway West, Dryburgh, Baldovie and Wester Gourdie date from the 1960s to the 1980s. Their slabs often have worn surfaces, cracked bays and old paint or coatings that are coming away. Before any resin goes down, we grind off the old finish, repair joints and cracks, and check for damp, because a resin is only as good as the concrete it is bonded to.

Cold units and short shutdowns

A lot of industrial space in and around Dundee is unheated, and winters on the Tay are cold. Resin curing slows sharply in the cold, so the system and the programme are chosen together. Where a floor must be back in use overnight, or the unit cannot be heated, MMA is often the answer. Where there is a longer shutdown, epoxy and polyurethane systems give a thicker, harder-wearing finish.

Garages and domestic floors

We also lay epoxy floors in garages and workshops at homes across Dundee and Angus, with the same preparation as an industrial floor.

Industrial Resin Flooring in Dundee: questions

Can you lay a resin floor in an unheated unit in winter?

Yes, with the right system. Epoxy and polyurethane need warmth to cure properly, so in a cold unit we either heat the space during the work or use an MMA resin, which cures in a few hours even at low temperatures.

Do you work on food production floors in Angus?

Yes. Food and drink producers across Angus and Perthshire need hygienic, washable floors laid tight to drains and plinths. We programme the work around production shutdowns where needed.

Can you come and look at our floor in Dundee before quoting?

Yes. We are based in the city, so a site visit is easy to arrange. We check the slab, the joints, any damp and the traffic before recommending a system.
