Chimney stack render removal and new roughcast, Edinburgh
We restored a large traditional chimney stack whose render had cracked and broken down. The defective render was removed back to the original masonry, the masonry was prepared and repaired, and a new external render system was applied and finished in an even roughcast.

The problem
The chimney stack is a long, tall stack carrying a long row of clay pots above a slate roof. Its render had cracked and deteriorated badly. The before photo shows the cracks running across the face of the stack from the pots down towards the roof line.
Our solution
We removed the defective render completely, back to the original masonry. Taking it all off, rather than patching the cracks, meant the masonry underneath could be properly prepared.
After the preparation and the masonry repairs the stack needed, we applied a new external render system. The stack was then finished in roughcast, kept consistent across its whole length. The work was carried out from scaffolding on the roof.
