External concrete stair refurbishment, Broughty Ferry

We refurbished a long external concrete stair that serves the upper floor of a sandstone building. The treads and nosings had worn and rounded off. We removed the defective concrete, rebuilt the steps, edges, risers and nosings against timber formwork, and finished the stair in a slip-resistant grey protective coating.

The problem

The stair is a long external flight with iron railings, rising along the side of a sandstone building to an upper floor and landing. Years of foot traffic, rain and frost had worn the treads hollow and rounded off the nosings, which makes a stair harder to use safely, especially in the wet.

Our solution

Defective concrete was removed and the worn surfaces were prepared so the new concrete would bond to the existing stair. Timber formwork was then fixed to the front of every step, set out to give even risers and square nosings along the whole flight. The damaged steps, edges, risers and nosings were rebuilt against the formwork, and the formwork was struck once the concrete had gained strength. The top landing edge, where the stair meets the stone retaining wall, was rebuilt in the same way.

Once the repairs were complete, the stair was prepared and finished with a grey protective coating with slip-resistant properties.
